SCHOOL OF RELIGION
Buena C. Algoso
School of Religion Director
Religious Education finds its basis in the dual mission of evangelization and catechesis which springs forth from the Sacrament of Baptism. Through Baptism we become children of God. Our parents, on our behalf, accept and embrace Christ’s mandate to make disciples of all peoples and nations (Matthew 28:19-20.) We are called to be faithful and to hand on the faith, to know Jesus Christ and to make Him known to others. The School of Religion provides the tools and materials for the systematic presentation of the faith for each grade level.
To present the content of the Catholic faith authentically and completely requires consistency and collaboration with parents, catechists, and other Christian faithful, especially members of the parish. All those who teach do so under the direction of Bishop Robert W. McElroy, the bishop of San Diego, and, Father Manny Ediza, the pastor of St. Michael Parish.
Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children and have the mission of teaching their children to pray and discover their vocation as children of God. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2223 & #2226)
KINDERGARTEN TO 6TH GRADE
Our Religious Education Program is designed to give children a firm foundation built on the basic tenets of our faith. The books used to convey this knowledge are published by Sadlier Publications. Classes are held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 7:15. Home study is available for families who are registered members of the parish. Bi-lingual classes are offered in Spanish on Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
JUNIOR HIGH TO 7TH AND 8TH GRADE
Sessions are offered Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 7:15. They are designed to foster and encourage young people to deepen their faith commitment, to pursue a deeper involvement in parish life, to develop a stronger sense of responsibility to the larger community through social ministry, and to participate in social activities with their peers sponsored by Youth Group.
CONFIRMATION PREPARATION FOR 9TH GRADERS
The Confirmation Preparation Program is designed to help young people understand themselves and their faith through study and action in relation to themselves and others, as they continue on their journey of faith. The sessions lead to an authentic understanding of what it means to be a true believing Catholic Christian and an active member of a faith community. All are encouraged to ask questions and to share their thoughts. This one year preparation course, which meets on Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 7:15, is a requirement for the Confirmation Candidate Program.
The St. Michael Parish sacramental preparation program is a two year program designed to assist and involve parents in the preparation of their children who have reached the age of reason for the reception of the Sacraments of First Penance and First Communion. Being a Catholic Christian is not only a private matter of individual choice but rather a personal vocation lived out in the context of the Church through the experience of the parish community. Therefore, as parishioners, families are expected to participate in Sunday Mass as well as Holy Days of Obligation.
The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privileged place for the catechesis of children and parents. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2226)
The goal of the program is to ensure that each child has sufficient knowledge and careful preparation so as to understand the mystery of Christ according to his or her own capacity, and can receive the Body of the Lord with faith and devotion.
THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS
The R.C.I.A. process provides formation for individuals out of high school & for children and youth who have never been baptized for reception into the Catholic Faith through the sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.) This also provides an opportunity to attend classes on pertinent topics for spiritual growth. To view the RCIA ministry page, click here.
